Hibiscus tea, brewed from the deep red calyces of the Hibiscus sabdariffa flower, is a deep red in color and tart in flavor, containing 15-30% organic acids, including citric, tartaric and malic acids. This herbal tea, enjoyed all over the world, goes by many different names. It is called Agua de Jamaica in Latin America, Chai Torsh in Iran, Tsoborodo in West Africa, and Red Sorrel in other parts of the Caribbean. This tea goes hand in hand with Christmas in many parts of the world. The tea is sweetened and spiced, sometimes mixed with rum.
Dieters or people with kidney problems often drink it without adding sugar for its beneficial properties and as a natural diuretic. A 2008 USDA study revealed consuming hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure. Three cups of tea daily resulted in an average drop of 8.1 points in their systolic blood pressure, compared to a 1.3 point drop in the volunteers who drank a placebo beverage. Study participants with higher pressure readings (129 or above) had a greater response to hibiscus tea: their systolic blood pressure went down by 13.2 points.
In a 2010 research review from Phytomedicine, scientists sized up four clinical trials on the use of hibiscus tea in treatment of high blood pressure and determined that hibiscus may help lower blood pressure. In a 2009 study from the Journal of Human Hypertension, scientists discovered that daily consumption of hibiscus tea may help lower blood pressure in people with Type 2 Diabetes. In another 2009 study from the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine, researchers assigned 60 diabetic patients to drink hibiscus tea or black tea twice daily for a month. Of the 53 people who completed the study, the study's authors found that members of the hibiscus group had a significant increase in HDL (good cholesterol) and a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL (bad cholesterol).
