Noni Juice

Noni Juice (Morinda Citrifolia) is a derivative of the noni plant, which has been popular for centuries among Polynesians, who introduced it to soldiers stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. The soldiers ate the fruit for added sustenance. As with many fruits, noni juice is a source of vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. Antioxidants can protect the body from age-related conditions and certain diseases, such as cancer. Thousands of years ago when seafaring people journeyed across the oceans in outrigger canoes to settle what is now French Polynesia, they carried only what was needed to survive. Noni was a prized cargo in these canoes because of its healthful properties and was considered queen of the ‘canoe plants’. Noni is referred to by other names in different areas of the tropics. In Malaysia, it is called Mengkudo. In Southeast Asia it is known as Nhau, Nonu in Samoa and Tonga, and Nono in Raratonga and Tahiti. People refer to it as Noni in the Marquesas Islands and Hawaii. Hawaiian noni fruit is renowned for its rich storehouse of enzymes, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals.
Noni juice is reported to have a broad range of therapeutic effects, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-tumor, analgesic, hypotensive, anti-inflammatory, and immune enhancing. Noni juice is also utilized for its ability to rejuvenate and revitalize, and to promote general well being. Its growing popularity is, at least to some degree, attributable to its stress reducing properties. Perhaps the most common application of noni is for infections. Noni has been documented to contain a mixture of anthraquinones, organic acids, exeronine, several vitamins (beta-carotene, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin C), minerals, iron and calcium. The potassium content of noni is similar to that in tomato and orange juice. Since the mid-nineties, noni has dramatically increased in popularity and has become one of the fastest growing nutritional supplements in the world. Noni research is a developing field of study. Several research projects on noni juice are underway or have been recently completed. They include: Dr. Mian-Ying Wang is working on the first human clinical trial involving Noni Juice at the University of Illinois, Rockford. The study is on “Chemopreventative Effect of Noni Juice in Human Smokers”; Dr. Anne Hirazumi Kim is doing follow-up work on noni and it’s effect on Lewis lung carcinoma cells; Dr. E. Furusawa at the University of Hawaii has researched the effect of Noni Juice and chemotherapy drugs on the 180 line of cancer cells; Individuals have uncovered noni’s ability to inhibit the COX-II enzyme while allowing the COX-I enzyme to continue to function; Scientists are investigating the antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties of Noni Juice; Dr. C Ho at Rutgers University is researching new novel compounds in noni; Researchers are investigating the toxicological, allergenicity and genotoxicity of noni; Research is also being done on the potent antioxidative properties of noni.
