Natural Essential Oils
An Essential Oil is a concentrated liquid containing aroma compounds from plants. An oil is ‘essential’ in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of a particular plant. Essential oils are used in cosmetics, perfumes, candles, soaps, household cleaning products, flavoring foods and drinks, adding scents to incense and other products.
Essential oils have also been used medicinally throughout history. In recent decades, interest in essential oils has evolved with the popularity of aromatherapy, which claims essential oils and other aromatic compounds have curative effects. Pure essential oil would burn skin if directly applied. They are almost always mixed with carrier oils because of their potency. Only a few drops of essential oil are needed - within a larger amount of carrier oil - to deliver a large amount of potent oil.
Essential oils have been widely used in health remedies for relief from minor pain, dissolving kidney stones, preventing flatulence and aiding childbirth. Turpentine oil and camphor are typically used in antiseptics and liniments. Some essential oils, such as clove oil or eugenol, were popular for many years in dentistry as antiseptics and local anesthetics. Thymol is also well known for its antiseptic properties. Certain essential oils work well for upper respiratory tract and bronchial problems, and also act as expectorants and decongestants. There is estimated to be over 180 different applications for the vast array of essential oils.
In an Annual Research Report, Weber State University published its findings on research done to identify which oils, and/or combination of oils, were effective against disease causing microorganisms. The study also compared the effectiveness of two often prescribed antibiotics, Penicillin and Ampicillin, with 4 essential oils (two single oils and two blends) – Cinnamon, Oregano, Immupower and Purification – against 2 bacteria with known high morbidity rates, E-Coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results clearly showed the 4 oils superior to both Penicillin and Ampicillin in their ability to kill the microorganisms. Interestingly, the kill rate with essential oils went up dramatically as more of the oil was added. The same effect, however, did not occur when more of the antibiotics were added.
Nature doesn't hold back its potency! Pure essential oils are very powerful and should be treated with caution. More specifically, we recommend the following: Consult a physician before using any essential oils, always mix essential oils with carrier oils before applying to skin, be extra cautious when using essential oils on children, avoid using essential oils in large doses without a physician's consultation, and it is not recommended to use essential minerals during pregnancy.
